Colombo, Feb 01 (Daily Mirror) - In response to a strike launched in government hospitals by 72 health unions, the Sri Lanka Army deployed troops at various government hospitals island-wide to support operational activities.

The Ministry of Health requested assistance from the Ministry of Defence to ensure uninterrupted hospital operations during the strike.

Accordingly, under the directives of the Commander of the Army Lt. General Vikum Liyanage, troops have been deployed to 26 government hospitals, including prominent ones such as the National Hospitals in Colombo and Kandy, Kalubowila, Karapitiya, Mahmodara, Peradeniya, Anuradhapura and Kurunegala Teaching Hospitals, as well as Matara, Balangoda, Eheliyagoda, Nawalapitiya, Badulla, Gampola, Meerigama, Homagama and Kegalle Hospitals.

The Army said 700 personnel have been deployed to meet the operational needs of these hospitals. In addition, the Army Commander has instructed additional troops to be prepared for deployment in case of emergencies.

There is wide spread dissent against this government from all sectors of the state service. As I understand it 72 trade unions are taking part in this strike, triggered by the preferential treatment meted out to a single section of the employees. Although the general public has to bear the brunt of these actions, I have to say the the health sector workers and in fact all employees of the state sector have many serious grievances not adequately addressed by this sordid government.

The only solution is to privatise everything except the education and health which in fact a world norm

What happens if you become seriously sick this week and you have no money for a private hospital? Will your trade unions, human rights organisations, American ambassador, Cardinal, NPP, come to rescue you? They of course will go to private hospitals.

A senior nurse who lives close by has sent her son to Aussie for studies. Wonder what their grievances are? So are many other government servants who portray that they are barely having 2 square meals. But we the foolish public believe everything that’s on social media and continue to bring this country down!

The Great Union Leader Dr. N.M.Perera had a simple solution for strikes, while he was Finance Minister under Sirimavo. He refused to have any discussion while the strike was on. He insisted that they end the strike if they want any discussion. During the strike, there was NO PAY for strikers.

@ Nimal There should be preferential treatment according to the hierarchy. Nobody complained when they were recruited soon after school while others had to study another five years in universities to be recruited. Nobody complained when one segment gets taxed at 36% and others don’t. Nobody complained when one segment has to face the music in even in courts if things go wrong while others have no responsibility . But when one segment gets compensated according to their position, suddenly everyone has to be treated equally.
