Colombo, May 19 (Daily Mirror) - A troop of monkeys have reportedly been causing disturbances at the residence of the Acting Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), located in the Kaduwela area.
According to reports, the troop, which visits the house once a week, recently attempted to enter the bedrooms of the Director General’s daughters and even tried to make off with personal belongings.
Witnesses state that the monkeys manage to open locked doors and engage in various disruptive activities inside the rooms. The Acting Director General Ranjan Marasinghe confirmed the incidents when inquired.
He noted that around 25 monkeys arrive at his residence weekly, causing fear among his family members. However, he emphasized that he does not view the visits as threatening but rather sees them as a beautiful display of nature, despite the disturbances.
Mr. Marasinghe also stated that his family members have never provided food or beverages to the monkeys, yet they continue to run through the house in search of food.
The incident highlights the growing monkey population in urban and suburban areas, an issue the Wildlife Department acknowledges as a concern that needs attention.
