Train derails on Kelani Valley Line; services restricted to Kosgama

Colombo, Oct. 19 (Daily Mirror) - A train travelling from Colombo Fort to Avissawella derailed between the Kosgama and Avissawella Railway Stations at around 6.45 p.m. today, the Railways Department confirmed.

The incident occurred after a tree and a mound of earth, dislodged by the prevailing heavy rains, fell onto the railway line. Only one wheel of the train was reported to have derailed.

As a result, train operations on the Kelani Valley Line have been temporarily restricted to run up to Kosgama. Railways officials are working to clear the track and restore normal services.

I think NPP government is delusional to think they can improve, train services, CEB, SLTB and all SMEs and by keeping them as it is. It is never ever going to happen. That is crystal clear. I hope they are just biting their time to find the right strategy to restructure them. Otherwise these will be their downfall. They must remove these restrictions on energy and transport so people can invest. Monopolies, even though they are government owned doesn't work, no incentive for the people who work there to improve them.

The Kelani Valley Railway Line remains one of the slowest train networks in the world which is a shame on the Ministry of Transport. No government has ever taken the initiative to upgrade it into a modern metro rail system. Every day, poor commuters are forced to leave their homes as early as possible, enduring long and tiresome journeys until they reach their destinations. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka Railways appears indifferent and has shown no real interest in even upgrading the existing line to improve efficiency and comfort.
