Colombo, June 5 (Daily Mirror) - A serious incident was narrowly averted this morning when two trains were found running dangerously close to each other on the same track along the coastal railway line, due to a fault in the signals system.
The incident occurred at approximately 9.45 a.m, when slow train No. 328, operating from Panadura to Colombo Fort, was given a green signal to proceed between Panadura and Moratuwa. However, another train was already running ahead in the same direction, raising grave concerns about passenger safety.
When contacted, the Sri Lanka Railways Engineers' Association (SLREA) confirmed that the situation arose due to a serious malfunction in the spectral signaling system along the coastal railway line. The Association has formally notified the railway authorities in writing, demanding an urgent resolution to the fault.
The SLREA warned that unless the issue is addressed immediately, trains operating on the coastal line may have to be suspended to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.
Responding to inquiries, Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara acknowledged receiving information about the signal fault between Panadura and Moratuwa. He stated that an investigation has been carried out, and instructions have been issued to promptly rectify the issue.
Passengers have expressed concern following the incident, as the coastal line is one of the busiest rail routes in the country, especially during peak morning hours.
Railway authorities are expected to issue an official statement on safety measures and corrective actions in the coming hours.
