Tragedy at Deduru Oya: Two dead, six missing as group of 15 swept away
Colombo, April 16 (Daily Mirror) - A tragic drowning incident at the Deduru Oya in the Kuratiyagahamula area of Kobeigane has left at least two people dead and six others missing.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon (April 16) when a group of 15 individuals went to bathe in the river.
According to the Kobeigane Police, the group included seven residents from Kadawatha who were visiting relatives for the New Year holidays, along with eight others from the local area.
Of the 15 people who entered the water, 10 were reportedly swept away or caught in the current. Emergency responders and local volunteers managed to rescue two individuals, who were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. However, two bodies, one male and one female, have already been recovered from the river, while the search continues for the remaining six people who are still unaccounted for.
