Authorities suspect toxic gas exposure in the deaths of two foreign guests at a Colombo city hostel, prompting an urgent investigation.
Meanwhile, the Fort Magistrate’s Court has ordered the closure of the Miracle Colombo City Hostel in Colombo 03 following the mysterious deaths of two foreign guests.
A 24-year-old British woman died after being admitted to the hospital on February 3, while a 26-year-old German woman, who was also hospitalized, succumbed to a similar illness on the same day. Both women were staying in a room at the hostel, which they checked into on January 30 and 31.
The guests exhibited symptoms such as vomiting and faintness, prompting their admission to the Colombo National Hospital. The cause of their illnesses and subsequent deaths remains unknown. However, police are investigating a possible link to toxic gas exposure, as it was reported that the room next to theirs had been fumigated with Phosphine.
In light of these events, the Kollupitiya Police submitted a report to the court, leading to the closure order under the Criminal Procedure Code No. 15 of 1979. This requires the hostel to meet health standards and obtain proper permits before reopening.
The bodies of the deceased are currently at the Colombo National Hospital mortuary, and a team from the Government Analyst's Department is conducting further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
