Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - While increasing attractive tourist engagement activities and developing facilities at tourist locations, the Ministry is aiming to raise the average daily expenditure of a tourist in the country to USD 200, Chairman of both the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Buddhika Hewawasam said.
Addressing the media, he said that the Ministry is currently working to increase the average daily expenditure of a tourist, which currently stands at USD 171.
"The Tourism Ministry aims to attract three million tourists to the country this year. To support this goal, a global marketing campaign will be launched in April to promote tourism in Sri Lanka. Marketing promotions are already underway in regions with high potential. The Ministry has also initiated online marketing campaigns with the goal of attracting tourists throughout the year," he said.
With these promotional efforts, the Ministry targets bringing in over 250,000 tourists each month.
The Tourism Promotion Bureau is also working on expanding accommodation facilities at key tourist destinations.
"Measures are underway to transition service providers in the informal tourism sector into the formal industry within this year. A mobile service has been launched to assist with this transition and to offer special facilities aimed at improving their services and promoting tourism. Currently, there are over 40,000 informal service providers offering accommodation, while around 8,000 to 9,000 individuals are registered in the formal tourism sector," Hewawasam added.
There are currently 26 tourism zones under the Tourism Promotion Bureau, and this number is expected to increase to 42, he said.
