Colombo, August 25 (Daily Mirror) - Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe took over a country with a completely collapsed economy when every other leader hesitated. Therefore, this is the time to express our gratitude to him, former United National Party (UNP) MP Sagala Rathnayaka said.

After conducting a bodhipooja ceremony for the former President, Rathnayaka explained his health condition, noting that it is not possible to visit him in hospital at present.

“As UNP members, we have continuously reminded the people that this is the time to show their gratitude to him,” Rathnayaka added.

He further explained that the current government was able to govern only because Wickremesinghe took charge of the country during its economic collapse, which gave people the chance to live freely today.

“Therefore, we request not only party members but all citizens of the country to stand in support of the former President and to conduct religious activities to bless him,” Rathnayaka said.

We will never forget Ranil saving us from the collapsed economy !!!! But who led to this collapse. You guys solely owe the country. On another note, this doesn't allow him or any of you guys to use the public money to your personal matters. Have to face the rule of law..!

We all firmly stand with siri Ranil Wikramsinghe for his service to nation in the crisis. When these communists were working to how the IMF shall not bail out Sri lanka in crisis. Ranil worked hard managing both internal and external affairs. He pulled out Sri Lanka from bankruptcy and economic disaster, and stabilised economy on path of recovery. We will not allow this democracy conquered in hands of Communist One Party dictatorship as they wished in 1971 and 1988. May Buddha and deities bless our ex president.

I am not and never been a fan of RW. he is as corrupt as everyone else, no doubt about that!! He cannot and should not be above the law!! But I have one big kwechchan... how could you differentiate the expense of a head of state whether it's official or personal?? Wherever he goes, he will have to carry his official security, vehicles, and a very safe accommodation!! I do not think any country expects a head of state to go by public transport or no security when attending a private function (while in office as a head of state). The only thing I can think of is you have cap on your personal expense (for which the state will foot the bill) and anything in excess will have to be reimbursed... can someone pls educate me on this !!
