Colombo, January 20 (Daily Mirror)- The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva stressed the need to win the Local Government election to be held in April this year if the programme initiated by the government is to be taken forward.
Speaking at an event in Colombo, he said the government has commenced a programme to change the country physically and morally and that it will have to face challenges in its endeavour to do so.
He said people have given a mandate of five years to change the country and that no one should be perturbed by various criticisms. "We need to be perturbed if the mandate is for six months. We have a mandate of five years and have ample time," he said.
Silva said the government has achieved massive success in the last two months in a collapsed economy and added that the government has laid the foundation required to develop the country.
He said the government has stopped waste and misuse of public money, pension was increased by Rs.3000, Aswesuma allowance was increased, school children were given Rs. 6,000 to purchase their stationery and electricity tariff was reduced etc.
Silva said the opposition claimed that there will be queues, rupee will depreciate against the Dollar, share market will collapse when we take over power but the NPP government has been able to strengthen the economy, share market and keep the dollar under Rs. 300 against the dollar.
"The President is not accompanying a large delegation on his foreign visits like in the past. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake accompanied only seven or eight people on his China tour. We have cut down on public money a great deal," he said.
He said the government is doing a difficult task in changing the country. "When we attempt to stop fraud and corruption, those who engage in such practices object to doing so. When we try to implement road rules, people who are reluctant to adhere to road rules object to it," he said.
He said it is important not to be discouraged by the criticism by the opposition and continue the good work.
