Thundershowers with severe lightning forecast
Colombo, Dec. 13 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for residents in Kalutara, Rathnapura, Galle, and Matara districts as thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in some areas.
According to the department, the showers may also bring temporary localized strong winds.
As such, authorities have urged the general public to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of damage or injury caused by lightning.
Precautionary measures advised include:
• Seek shelter indoors and avoid taking cover under trees.
• Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and water bodies during thunderstorms.
• Refrain from using wired telephones or connected electrical appliances.
• Avoid traveling in open vehicles like bicycles, tractors, and boats.
• Be cautious of fallen trees and downed power lines.
• Contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance if needed.
