Colombo, October 1 (Daily Mirror) - The registration of three-wheelers used for passenger transport in the Western Province has been made mandatory from today, according to the National Three-Wheeler Association of Sri Lanka Self-Employed Professionals.

Association Chairman Mahinda Sunil told the Daily Mirror that the move was introduced to address longstanding issues caused by the lack of proper regulation in the three-wheeler service sector.

“Registering their vehicles will benefit drivers and help secure their careers,” he said. “Registered drivers will be allocated permanent parking spaces and will be able to continue their profession without interference from the Municipal Council or the Urban Development Authority.”

Three-wheeler owners can complete the registration process with the Western Provincial Council at a cost of Rs. 3,500. The association has also requested that payments be allowed in installments to ease the burden on drivers.

The Chairman urged all three-wheeler drivers to take advantage of the regulation to protect their livelihoods and formalise their profession.
