Three killed, 13 injured in school van-lorry collision in Kuliyapitiya

Colombo, August 27 (Daily Mirror) - Three people, including two children and the driver of a school van, were killed while 13 others sustained injuries following a collision between a school van and a lorry in Dummalasooriya, Kuliyapitiya, this morning, police said.

The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police said preliminary investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.

IGP the drunken Lorry driver should be arrested and put in to life imprisonment for his reckless driving. His punishment should be a lesson to other drivers who drinks and drive.

Doesn't matter which party was in the wrong, innocent lives are lost. Also, from the photos on social media, the VAN seems like a rust bucket and did not seemed to be road worthy. If it was in a better condition, and was built with better safety standards, at least damage could have been reduced.

Another achievement for the big headed big talk Transport minister who is always talking about arresting and imprisoning the opposition politicians. But killer drivers are always pardoned and no laws are applied for daily traffic violators majority of whom are bus and heavy vehicle drivers.

Most school vans are rickety old ones more than 25 years old. And they drive slow like maniacs cutting across without any signals. I won’t blame the truck driver alone. Having bad experiences with school vans drivers, the law should apply properly to all. Just because they drive school children, they shouldn’t be treated with pity.

It is a sad fact that many of our motorists lack discipline and respect for other road users. This is not limited only to heavy vehicles but also those driving luxury vehicles. Strict action must be taken against errant road users and corruption among the traffic police must be stopped if things are to improve. Roadworthiness of vehicles must be checked. Emission tests alone are grossly inadequate while renewing revenue licenses.
