What policy steps can we take to make Sri Lankan roads safer? I am genuinely asking. It is not only an issue of reckless drivers all in a rush to save 5 mins or look like the lokka. It is also a public transport issue. If the state can use foreign support to drastically rehaul the public transport system in this country and make people value public transport rather than private transport, we will not only eliminate the private transport mafia but also reach truer forms of development like in Europe where state provided/subsidised public transport system, and not private transport issue the sign of a wealthy country.

Just returned from a SL holiday. 98% of all drivers do not know to drive safely. This is not limited to just bus drivers. I mean 98% of car, tuk-tuk, bus, motor bikes etc. Education and enforcement must go hand-in-hand. As I see it drivers do not wish to comply with the law. It’s fun for them to break the law and this attitude must change. Drivers and pedestrians are not risk averse when it comes to safety. Police take an apathetic attitude too.
