Third phase of Chemmani mass grave excavation begins after break

Colombo, August 25 (Daily Mirror) - The third part of the third phase of excavation work at the Chemmani human mass grave commenced today (Monday).

The court had granted 45 days of approval for the third phase of excavation at the Chemmani mass grave site. Up until the 6th of this month, excavation work was carried out for 32 days, after which the process was temporarily suspended.

Today marks the 33rd day of the excavation process and operations resumed accordingly. As part of today's activities, the existing excavation sites were further expanded, and the work is scheduled to continue tomorrow as well.

During the 41 days of excavation carried out in stages up to the 6th of this month, 150 sets of skeletal remains were discovered and completely exhumed.

During the court hearing held on the 14th of this month regarding the Chemmani case, a request was made to continue the excavation work. Acting on this, the judge instructed authorities to proceed with the necessary measures and preparations for the upcoming stages of excavation are currently underway.
