Teenage girl dies after falling from 12th floor in Borella
The Borella Police have launched an investigation after a 16-year-old girl, a Grade 11 student of the Colombo Musaeus College, was found dead after falling from the 12th floor of a 24-story apartment complex in Borella.
The incident occurred last night (10), and the girl, a resident of Serpentine Road, Borella, succumbed to her injuries after being admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo in a critical condition.
Her mother revealed that the girl had been undergoing treatment for mental stress for some time.
However, investigations are ongoing to determine whether the girl had jumped from the balcony or if the fall was an accident.

Childrens' mental stress could be the result of parents being too busy to properly care for the children or putting pressure on the children about studies

Stop being judgemental - this could have been your child if the circumstances were different. Parents in this country are stretched to the max with financial, domestic and societal issues. Placing pressure on children to study is quite normal in South Asian countries. It is part of our culture. Blame the new generation and their obsession with social media and trying to mimic the West.

KIND ATTN OF P.M and Minister of Women anf children affairs;- High time please introduce new system of education from Montessori onwards to educate children about subjects like psychology etc instead of teaching subjects like civics, geography, and other subjects which are not necessary for day to day life. Also educate principals and teachers about counseling, psychology and have half yearly meeting with parents. Because in the recent past there many cases of children deaths due to falling from higher buildings. Thanks

Yes when parents argue they take it from children and children in turn decide to try the 3rd party like suicides, drugs, liquor, cigarettes, boy / girl friends or sex for healing their inner wounds in their hearts. Parents must teach the children how to approach GOD to solve family issues. Yes teach them about God, psychology, counselling, SPORTS , better friends etc.

A lot of Colombo students are unhappy that far away district students have easier path to university. When will this unfairness end. Students in rural districts shouldn't be allowed to get into university with less marks than students from best schools in Colombo. Total discrimination, and clear sign of the inequality towards more capable students.

Today, children have become so "artificial". When we were children, we interacted with nature, played with other children, read books, visited our grandparents in the village during school holidays, etc. Almost all these kids are now engrossed in mobile phones, aloof from nature and reality. Most of the day is spent with these electronic devices on social media and games, sometimes inculcating negative thoughts and feelings.

Children need time to grow physically, And MENTALLY. They need to have time to relax Pressure to excel in any field is not an option.but an absolute NO NO. Long hours in school is STRESSFUL Adding private tuition makes it worse. THEY NEED TO RELAX. What they need is guidance and supervision. Very sad, such a young aged girl. Given a few of those happened in the recent past, I hope the responsible authorities will carry out the investigations aiming to address the root cause of the issue. I wonder if these high rise residential buildings meet the necessary safety standards (eg. fencing barriers to prevent easy jumping or falling from the top)?

Children of young age of this range, if they commit suicide, relevant authorities shoud investigate the perents and care takers for murder. This is not the age to decide on their own life, because they are too young and very valuable to decide on their own life.

Instead of half yearly meetings between school authorities and parents, it should be made every quarter. Besides, a separate counter should be opened at all schools for the Vice Principal or a senior teacher to meet parents if the latter have matters to discuss about their children. This will be a very fruitful action. Childrens' unusual behaviours at home can also be discussed and solution sought.

I blame the schools, teachers and principals. Schools only belittle and harass students and parents. Teachers, especially principals believe they're saintly higher than students or parents and demand VIP respect from students. Salaries should be cancelled for all teachers and principals, they must be made to work as volunteers. As their work is worthless.

Doctors and parents should be awsre that certain antidepressants increase the risk ok of suicide amongst teenagers. Well known. Balcony should be locked off. Parents should have been alerted to this risk. Electroconvulsive therapy is easlily available very effective as an adjunct to treatment

All the neglect from 1994 Chandrika to Mahinda needs to be resolved by the NPP government. Toilets, education, health, exports have been neglected for over 20 years. Transport, electricity generation, agriculture, government administration, rules and law have been neglected. May be roads and few infrastructure has been improved.

When I was at school I never had any suicidal thoughts, Despite of having so much financial hardships, Coming from a lower middle class family, there are lot went on those day but My family and friends are gem, they never let me feel like I'm less than anyone, It was a very simple and easy life during 80 and 90's, I wonder what a 16 year old girl going under treatment for mental stress, what was she stressed about is a big question, May her soul rest in peace.

specially government schools are not geared to or do not have any interest to looking into the mental wellbeing of the students...most teachers do not want the harassment of thinking about the mental wellbeing of kids..

This situation is alarming! Teaching psychology, values, leadership, basic economics, and life skills from an early age is crucial for children, starting as early as Montessori rather than out dated complex and duplicated subjects. Children are becoming increasingly pressurized, selfish, sensitive, isolated, and emotionally fragile. At the same time, parents face immense pressure to earn a living and provide for their families, often sacrificing quality family time. This creates a vicious cycle that harms both the emotional well-being of children and the stability of family units. Schools must also become more child-friendly environments. Parent-teacher committees should collaborate meaningfully to find effective solutions, rather than merely meeting for procedural compliance. We urgently request the Prime Minister to implement policies that support holistic education and promote work-life balance for families, strengthening the foundation of our human resources.
