Teasing and attempted robbery cost four lives

Four persons including a 16-year-old boy had died in three separate homicides reported in Galgamuwa, Gampaha and Mutur last night.  

Investigations have brought to light that family dispute, making fun of a drunk man and an attempted robbery were the cause for the tragic deaths.

The Galgamuwa Police initiated an investigation after a 16-year-old boy and a 67-year-old man were slain with hoe by a 42-year-old suspect on Tuesday evening at Palukandewa in Galgamuwa. 

Police said the victims, who were the father and a relative's son of the suspect's wife, who had got into an argument with the intoxicated suspect over a family dispute. The police arrested the suspect following the incident.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man was hacked to death by a thief who tried to steal the hand bags of two women at Akarawita in Gampaha yesterday.

Police said a couple came in a motorcycle, tried to rob two women walking on the road yesterday. At that time, the robber couple fell from the motorbike. Police said two persons including the victim who were in the vicinity attempted to catch the woman. Then the knife-wielding man, the woman's partner had attacked both the men to rescue his female partner.

The injured men were admitted to the Gampaha Hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries subsequently.
Police said investigations are underway to arrest the couple who fled after the area.

In another homicide, a 50-year-old person was lynched at Bharathipuram in Mutur last night when he was making fun of the drunk man.

Police said the 48-year-old man was arrested over the murder. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
