Colombo, August 5 (Daily Mirror) - In response to a statement by MP Ravi Karunanayake that Office Assistants of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka are drawing a higher salary than that of some categories of teachers, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne told Parliament today that teaching will be among the hightest paid jobs in Sri Lanka before long.

It was revealed that the starting salary of teachers is Rs. 53,000 while Grade One teachers are drawing a total salary of Rs. 157,000. However it was also reavaled that only 15 percent of Sri Lankan teachers are being paid the highest average salary.

Not by AU, but by tuition. Teaching has already been outsourced to tuition masters. Right from grade 1, children go to tuition classes. For AL, no one goes to scholls, only to tuition classes. Instead, sack all teachers and close schools es.

It is highly unfair that teachers' salaries are significantly lower compared to those of Office Assistants at the Central Bank and Work Assistants at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, who earn over Rs. 500,000 per month by working more than 1,000 hours of overtime per month.

Traditionally CB has been paying the best salary in Sri Lanka : better than many other Asian countries. It is unchecked and unchallenged by any one : MPs did not bother about it: Now in this digital age , people know all those secret salaries differences between different departments: I too agree teachers must be paid good salary like university staff but one question we need to ask about it: Do our teachers teach at all in our schools? Do they work hard? Before we used to send inspectors to monitor the progress of their work but now ? Many teachers don’t go schools but get salaries? Even if they go they don’t work hard?’now our A/L students get good result not because of school teachers but due to tuition teachers and due to digital learning? Do they really deserve any salary increase? Politicians can do it but?’???

Teachers and Police officers should remain in the well paid category, as teachers are responsible for creating a well educated disciplined society, while Police officers are responsible for enforcing law and order impartially without corruption.

What about the quality of their work? Most teachers are fibbing. They skip textbook chapters when they lack knowledge to teach it and they also demand that students attend their after school tuition classes for a fee. Many rural teachers fail the students in school if they don't have the money to pay fees and attend the teacher's private tuition class. I have heard horror stories from poor kids who I have helped in the past.
