Colombo, July 20 (Daily Mirror) - Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced that starting in August, steps will be taken to train teacher trainers as part of the broader effort to improve teacher education and professional development in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at an education reform awareness program held on July 19 at the Dakshinapaya Auditorium in Galle, which was attended by education authorities from the Southern Province, the Minister highlighted that the curricula in teacher training colleges had remained unchanged for 16 years.
“The curricula must be revised. Teachers and education professionals need continuous training to keep up with the changing educational landscape,” she emphasized.
Dr. Amarasuriya said the government’s new education reform initiative aims not only to update the curriculum but also to strengthen teacher professionalism, reform the administrative structure, and upgrade infrastructure to ensure all children have access to equal and quality education.
“This is not something done for personal benefit—it's a responsibility we must fulfill based on the country’s needs,” she said.
She acknowledged that while some members of society engage in constructive discussions about the reforms, others criticize the initiative without proper understanding or for political gain.
“We understand the reform process is challenging. But it cannot be ignored. The people have entrusted us with the mandate to address these issues,” the Minister added, stressing that significant work remains to fully transform the country’s education system.
