Tea factory worker dies after being trapped in machine

Colombo, Nov. 5 (Daily Mirror) - A worker at the Maussakele Tea Factory, operated by the Maskeliya Plantation Company, died after being trapped in a tea processing machine in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The victim, identified as Kitnan Wijejakumar (49), was a father of two. He reportedly sustained severe injuries in the incident and succumbed to them at the scene.

Maskeliya Police have launched further investigations into the incident.

The employer has a duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of workers. Hope there is a proper police investigation. It is tragic that a poor worker has died. Who will now provide for his family?

Normally this type of accidents happen in Tea Factories due to the garments what they wear get caught to the running machines.I can remember before thirty five years one female worker's saree got caught to the working rotor vane and the entire body crushed into pieces. This happens due to pure negligence of the workers.They must be educated

Dear Fritz, Tragic indeed. What health, safety and welfare protections were there at this tea factory? Was the employer even insured? Who will provide for this poor man’s wife and two children?
