Suspension of mineral transport during school hours amended: GSMB

Colombo, September 17 (Daily Mirror)- The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has revoked the suspension of transporting minerals during school hours.

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) said the new condition imposed on transport of minerals during school hours was amended after considering the requests of those in the construction industry.

The transport of minerals during school hours has been permitted near schools and in places where children cross roads under a speed limit and strict police supervision.

The transport if minerals was suspended during school hours between 6.30 a.m. and 7.45 a.m. and from 11.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. following a fatal collision between a school van and a lorry in Dummalasooriya, Kuliyapitiya recently.

The transportation of building materials like rubble metal sands gravel should be confined to the night hours. Specially from 10.00 pm to 6.00 am of the following morning. During mid night the traffic jam on the main roads is considerably lower than the peak hours. Hence even the building contractors as well as government institutions will be able to get their materials transported to the required destinations early and they can start construction activities on time and more conveniently in the morning. On the other hand If the transportation of building materials that are derived from metal queries and other sources is confined to the night hours the traffic congestion that is on the main roads during the day time can also be decreased for some extent

if got an accident with involving other categories of vehicles such as buses, would suspend that too during peak hours ? Also number of mineral transport vehicle is negligible compared to other categories of vehicles. suggest to address the root causes of accidents, drivers discipline

Leaders of Sri Lanka! Please adopt the rules of operation for commercial vehicles from a developed country! What you are doing right now is reacting to individual incidents and coming up with unpragmatic “rules” rather that a mechanism that fosters public safety. 1. Classify all vehicles over 5,000 kg and implement an annual safety test (administered by a registered garage). The vehicle must be in excellent mechanical condition to pass the safety test. 2. Create a Ministry of Transportation Safety Officer core that has the authority to pull over commercial vehicles and inspect key safety features of a vehicle. 3. Create commercial vehicle weighing facilities at key locations, especially on highways, so that overweight vehicles can be kept out of public roads. 4. Every driver of a commercial vehicle must do a safety check before they start the day and must fill a logbook. 5. Introduce heavy fines and license suspensions for repeat offenders.
