A suspect wanted by the police over widespread robberies and chain- snatching was shot dead by police when he tried to attack an OIC of Police last night at Maduruvita in Gampaha.
Police said the dead suspect was also wanted over a recent murder in Gampaha where a 30-year-old man was stabbed to death during a scuffle when the latter tried to prevent a bag-snatching incident from two women at Akarawita in Gampaha.
According to police, the suspect and a female came in a motorcycle and tried to snatch the handbags from the two women who were walking on the road on September 20.
At that time, two men who were in the vicinity attempted to thwart the robbery by catching the suspects.
But the man who was riding the motorbike attacked both the men to rescue his female accomplice during the melee and stabbed one of the men.
The injured men were rushed to the Gampaha Hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries subsequently.
It was also revealed that the couple was involved in snatching several handbags of women in the Gampaha and Kelaniya areas.
Police said meanwhile, the Gampaha Crime Investigation Division OIC and a policeman had left for Kotugoda area in Gampaha last night to arrest the duo following a tip off.
At that time, the policeman opened fire at the man with his T-56 assault rifle, when he tried to attack the OIC with a machete.
The suspect died after being admitted to the Gampaha Hospital. The police also arrested the 26-year-old female accomplice.
