Colombo, March 20 (Daily Mirror) - An individual who had multiple warrants issued on him nationwide, for defrauding victims through a marriage advertisement scam by impersonating a CID officer, was further remanded till April 3 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali.
The suspect, Hemal Udara Ranasinghe from Pinnawala, was arrested by officers of the Cyber Crimes Division of the Colombo Crimes Department on February 5.
The suspect allegedly contacted individuals who had placed matrimonial advertisements in newspapers, pretending to be an officer from the Cyber Crimes Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He falsely claimed that their daughter’s nude photographs had been found on a device seized from another suspect and then extorted money from them, amounting to approximately Rs. 300,000.
Investigations have revealed that the extorted money was deposited into another person’s bank account and later withdrawn through an ATM by a third party. The court was told that efforts were underway to arrest both the account holder and the person who withdrew the money.
Police further told court that 11 complaints related to similar frauds had been received by the Cyber Crimes Division.
The suspect had been living at various locations across the country to evade arrest. Eventually, he was apprehended by the Cyber Crimes Division while he was attending a funeral in Avissawella. It was also revealed that he had previously been in remand custody and had orchestrated this scam with the help of another suspect while in prison.
