Suspect arrested over damage to newly reopened Pettah Bus Stand

Colombo, April 12 (Daily Mirror) - A suspect has been arrested in connection with an incident of property damage at the recently renovated Pettah Central Bus Stand, Police said.

The bus stand, which was refurbished and reopened to the public on April 8, 2026, sustained damage to several newly installed facilities, prompting a complaint to be lodged with the Pettah Police Station by the Welfare Division.

According to the Police Media Division, investigations led to the arrest of a 33-year-old resident of Kelaniya on April 11 in the Kelaniya area.

Officers also recovered a portion of the stolen items from the suspect’s possession.

Police further stated that a detailed assessment report on the extent of the damage is expected to be obtained from the Sri Lanka Air Force.

The renovation was done spending everybody's tax money including the economically challenged. Give the suspect a good and tasty food and he shouldn't think of doing things of this nature in the near future.

Dear Sir, give them maximum punishment for damaging government property so the other who intend to do such things will learn a good lesson. Also the public who comes from the village are not educated enough how to use a modern toilet. Also the use of chewing netel withing the premises should be stopped and those breaking the law fined.

An awareness program should be inaugurated to instill in the minds of Sri Lankans that public property should be safeguarded and also that under the Clean Sri Lanka policy spitting betel chew should be avoided in public places!!!!!!!
