Colombo, June 7 (Daily Mirror) - Speaking to the media for the first time outside the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Manory Salley, the wife of former Major General Suresh Salley, defended her husband, insisting that he is innocent and is being unfairly used as a "scapegoat."
Fighting back tears, Mrs. Salley expressed deep disappointment over what she described as the unjust and inhumane treatment of a public servant who dedicated decades of his life to national service. She said that her husband had committed no wrongdoing and was being subjected to severe injustice.
Mrs. Salley further revealed that her husband has commenced a fast unto death while in detention as a form of protest against his continued detention and what he believes to be unfair treatment. Despite repeated attempts by family members to persuade him to end the hunger strike, she said he remains determined to continue his protest, maintaining his innocence and refusing to bow to pressure.
She said that Major General Salley had served the country for 38 years, often placing national duty ahead of his personal and family life. She recalled that his demanding responsibilities in national security frequently prevented him from attending important family events, including his children's school functions.
Expressing concern over his deteriorating health, Mrs. Salley urged authorities to transfer him to a hospital before his condition worsens. She said that given his current state of mind and commitment to the hunger strike, he is unlikely to request medical assistance himself, making it the responsibility of the authorities to safeguard his well-being.
