Supermarket fined Rs. 500,000 for selling Nadu rice above control price

Colombo, July 25 (Daily Mirror) - A supermarket in Gampola has been fined Rs. 500,000 after pleading guilty to selling local Nadu rice above the government-controlled maximum retail price, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.

The Kandy District Investigation Officers of the CAA had filed a case before the Gampola Magistrate's Court against Kasagala Green Super Pvt. Ltd., located on Hospital Road, Gampola, for selling local Nadu rice at Rs. 240 per kilogram, exceeding the government-mandated maximum retail price of Rs. 230.

The violation was detected during a raid conducted by CAA investigation officers on June 23, 2026.

When the case was taken up before the Gampola Magistrate's Court on July 14, the company pleaded guilty to the charges. The court subsequently imposed a fine of Rs. 500,000.

The CAA urged consumers to report traders selling food items above the controlled price, as well as substandard or expired products, by contacting its 1977 hotline during office hours.
