Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) - A supermarket in Beruwala has been fined Rs. 1 million for selling locally produced Keeri Samba rice above the government-mandated Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
According to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), the supermarket had been selling Keeri Samba rice at Rs. 355 per kilogram, significantly higher than the gazetted MRP of Rs. 260 per kilogram.
During a raid, CAA officers found 5kg packs of the rice being sold for Rs. 1,775, exceeding the legally permitted price.
The CAA’s Kalutara District Investigative Officers filed legal action against the supermarket under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
When the case was taken up before by the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court on July 17, the defendants pleaded guilty, following which the Magistrate imposed a fine of Rs. 1 million.
