Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - The sun will be directly overhead parts of the country today (09) at approximately 12:12 noon, with the closest areas identified as Chilaw, Bingiriya, Halmillawewa, Panduwasnuwara, Gokarella, Kawudupelella, Koppaveli and Kirankulam.
According to the Department of Meteorology, the phenomenon occurs due to the apparent northward relative motion of the sun. As a result, it will be directly overhead various latitudes of Sri Lanka between April 05 and April 15 this year.
During this period, locations across the island experience the sun at its zenith, meaning it appears directly overhead at solar noon, causing minimal or no shadows for vertical objects.
Authorities said such occurrences are a natural annual event linked to the Earth’s tilt and orbit, marking the transition of the sun’s apparent movement across the equatorial region.
