Sudden floods cause heavy traffic in Kandy

Colombo, Sept. 9 (Daily Mirror) - A sudden flood was reported this evening in the Mahayiyawa area along the Kandy–Katugastota main road following heavy rainfall.

The flooding occurred after nearly an hour of intense rain in Kandy city and surrounding areas, officials said.

As a result, the Kandy Railway Station and Mahayiyawa area were inundated, causing heavy traffic congestion in and around the city.

Kandy city has been engulfed by the massive illegal constructions. The drains are partially blocked with the poor drainage system. If the rain intensity is high within few hours the city is inundated with water. It may take long hours to subside or recede the water sometimes this stagnant water may cause the certain infectious diseases along with other sanitary issues. Further this city has been declared as a world heritage site. Therefore in order to keep the city clean and healthy. The municipal council along with other government stakeholders should take necessary measures in due course. Otherwise this picturesque city will be deprived of its world status

Railway land between Hill St and Mawilmada, Drains near Mahaiyawa tunnel, Hospital land are the major grabs by illicit occupants. Some have constructed multi storey buildings, supported and approved by State officials and Municipal Council. Politicians who supported them should be investigated.
