Strong wind advisory issued for 15 districts amid active South-West monsoon

Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) - The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued a strong wind advisory for 15 districts across the country, citing the active south-west monsoonal condition.

According to the advisory, wind speeds of up to 60 kmph can be expected at times over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western, and North-Central provinces. Elsewhere on the island, fairly strong winds of up to 40 kmph may also occur intermittently.

Authorities have warned that the high winds could result in damage to roof tiles and sheets, power and communication lines, and the breaking or uprooting of trees. Agricultural crops such as paddy, bananas, papayas, and other orchards are also at risk of being damaged. Additionally, small boats and harbor yachts may be affected, while low-lying coastal areas could experience sea water inundation.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize risks and ensure safety.
