Strengthen tug-boat fleet to boost efficacy of the port: Minister

The fleet of tugs at the Colombo Port should be strengthened to further boost the efficiency of the maritime operations at the Port, Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

He made these comments at a recent inspection visit to the tug-boat section of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

The employees, staff and the Executive Officers at the section emphasized the measures to be taken towards increasing efficacy of these operations and as such, instructions were extended to relevant authorities to take steps to add at least two more new tug-boats to the tug-boat fleet of the port, in addition to the seven tug-boats already in operation.

“Increasing the number of tug-boats at the port will increase the operational efficacy and enable to ease the handling of larger vessels calling at the port. It is my responsibility to boost the efficacy at the Port to bring more foreign exchange as revenue to the country. Accordingly, I will take all necessary steps to expedite the development activities inside the port,” the Minister said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

No harm will be done as far as all these boats are manufactured in Sri Lanka only. Though do not want to mentioned the names of companies here Sri Lankan has the technology in this area accept to all as world class. Lets protect our own industries.

This is not the time to purchase new tug boats and spend more money when there is a restriction in the arrival of ships. You people would have thought about the improvement of the Colombo harbour rather than building a shipless port in Hambanthotta.

Before adding first bring upto optimum efficiency level and then add extra. Dont add cost to the current operating cost. Fools jump at money making plans.

Mr minister more boats don't increase the efficiency it is how they are utilised gives a measure of efficiency.Let the tug boat operators given more training to manage more efficient operation.

Even if there is a need, let the Colombo Dock Yard handle it. But your ulterior motives are clear given your past records. Don't think about your percentage. Think about the country at this stage at least.
