Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - Outgoing Auditor General Chulantha Wickramaratne has revealed that several corruption investigations have uncovered the involvement of state officials.

Speaking to media, Wickramaratne, who officially retired yesterday after completing his six-year term as the 41st Auditor General of Sri Lanka, said “While politicians are frequently held accountable for corruption, our investigations show that some state officials are also complicit,” he stated.

“Politicians alone cannot sign off on cheques and vouchers—these actions are often carried out by officials within the system. If we don’t address this issue now, the country will continue down the same path.”

He emphasized the importance of oversight mechanisms such as the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) in establishing an effective framework to tackle corruption and enhance accountability.

It is very well known that Senior State Officials acted hand in glove with the politicians in deals. With NPP government their incomes fell and some State officials started to go slow with their work. Respective Ministers must investigate if there is a go slow in the work and take action

All make accusations ONLY AFTER leaving office. While holding office they "toe the same line." What SUCCESSFUL prosecutions for "corruption," "criminal breach of trust," "cheating" or otherwise have ever been instituted by the COPE or COPA via the Attorney-General?! Only "gallery-talk"!

What is the power the state officials have compared to politicians in power? No Minister prepare vouchers, write a cheque, sign a cheque or bring cash from the bank. He simply wants money and orders verbally. The poor official, clerk and cashier have to run around to bring cash to the Minister, who will take the money and leave. These poor Govt. servants have family to care for. How many of you who make comments worked in Govt. sector? Do you all remember the Govt. Auditor attached to the Education Dept. in Kandy who queried the bogus traveling claim? He got acid on his face! Did anyone call him a hero? They called him a fool!

Everyone knows 70 percent of our state officials are corrupt. Try getting something done at the cmc or the UDA or any other government department. It's a culture of corruption. Especially amongst a certain community. Poor AKD.
