State Defence Minister reveals actions on those igniting religious disputes

State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon said various elements with vested interests are eyeing to disrupt the prevailing peaceful situation in the country by igniting religious disputes.

Speaking to the media at the Ministry office in Colombo, the State Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining religious stability for a healthy society.

He said there are obvious signs that another crisis is being triggered in the country once again, especially at a crucial time when the country is on the path of recovery from a severe economic crisis acutely experienced in recent times.

"If a person or an organized group is trying to whip up communal sentiments or work with similar motives, then we will not hesitate to strictly enforce the law in accordance with Chapter 9 of the Constitution and the Penal Code," he added.

I am fully supportive of Blasphemy laws in countries like Sri Lanka. The reason being any religious insult (perceived or actual) is enough to send marauding brainless street mobs (and some instances encouraged by so called religious monks) seeking nothing but Revenge and then go on rampage burning and looting properties, and even harassing and harming people . We have seen that in Sri Lanka before many a times it is quite sad

People are struggling to have three meals a day, for no fault of theirs'. It is easy to instigate them. This is what the trouble makers doing now. It is not that they love their race, religion, or language! It is fun time for them. Look at their strong emotions. Even loser Mervin has become hero.
