Colombo, January 9 (Daily Mirror) - Pilgrims can now safely access Sri Pada via the Hatton route, as the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has confirmed that there is no longer a risk of landslides in the Mahagiridamba area, Venerable Dorapane Sumanajothi Thera said.
Speaking following an inspection carried out yesterday (8), the Thera said NBRO officials assessed the previously affected area and determined that it is now safe for pilgrims. Access along the Hatton road had been restricted earlier after a large mound of earth collapsed in the Mahagiridamba area due to Cyclone Ditwah, raising concerns over a potential landslide risk.
“Currently, the site has been renovated with concrete side walls, new steps, and safety railings. Pilgrims can now worship at Sri Pada safely and without any hindrance along the Hatton Road,” the Thera explained.
Following the collapse, authorities undertook restoration and safety improvement work at the site, including the construction of concrete retaining walls, the installation of new steps, and the fixing of safety railings to ensure the safety of devotees.
NBRO officials inspected the renovated area yesterday and are expected to issue a detailed report in the coming days, further outlining the findings of the inspection.
