Colombo, May 30 (Daily Mirror) - A Sri Lankan female passenger was arrested by Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning while attempting to smuggle a stock of foreign-manufactured cigarettes valued at Rs. 345,000.
The suspect, a 46-year-old woman from Deraniyagala, had been employed in domestic work in Dubai and had arrived in the country aboard Fitz Air flight 8D-822 from Dubai at 5:30 a.m. today (30).
Upon inspection of her luggage, Customs officials discovered 115 cartons containing 23,000 ‘Platinum’ brand cigarettes concealed within two suitcases.
She was immediately detained by Customs officers at Katunayake Airport, and further investigations are currently underway to determine the intended distribution network and any potential accomplices.
Customs officials stated that strict legal action will be taken against attempts to smuggle foreign cigarettes into the country without proper clearance.
