Washington DC, Feb. 12 (Daily Mirror) – The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC warmly welcomed the ‘Walk for Peace’ on 10 February 2026, a nationwide walk led by Buddhist monks promoting world peace, which drew attention and support from people across the United States and around the globe.

As part of the event, the Embassy joined the Danna organized by the Sri Lankan community in the DMV area at the National United Methodist Church, offering traditional Sri Lankan cuisine to over 200 attending Buddhist monks.

Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe, responding to an invitation from Secretary of the District of Columbia Ms. Kimberly A. Basset, attended an interfaith ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral. Thousands of supporters gathered outside the Cathedral to show solidarity with the Walk for Peace. He was accompanied by Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Madhuka Wickramarachchi.

During the visit, the Head Priest and monks paused at the Embassy, where the Ambassador presented Atapirikara and pinned the Sri Lankan flag on the robe of Ven. Pannakara. Embassy staff and members of the Sri Lankan community offered flowers and greeted the monks, while water bottles distributed by the Embassy were highly appreciated by participants.

Following the ceremony, Ambassador Samarasinghe, Embassy staff, and Sri Lankan community members joined the monks in walking, further demonstrating their support for the message of peace.
