Sri Lankan audiences must be given opportunity to watch international films: President

Colombo,Nov. 26 (Daily Mirror)- President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today that the advancement of cinema contributes to the spiritual and cultural development of a country’s citizens and that while safeguarding the domestic film industry, Sri Lankan audiences must be given the opportunity to watch international film productions.

He made these remarks during a discussion held this morning (26) at the Presidential Secretariat with film distributors and producers.

A lengthy discussion took place regarding the issues they face as an industry and the President provided reasonable solutions to all of those concerns, President’s Media Division (PMD).

The film distributors and producers briefed the President on the irregularities occurring in the payment of Value Added Tax (VAT) and the limitations faced in expanding the industry.

They also informed President Dissanayake that the film industry recorded its highest-ever revenue in history in 2025 and requested the continued support of the Government to sustain this progress.

Sri lankan audience has been watching all sorts of international movies for a long time. May be JVP leader had not noticed that because they were busy in destructive activities in the past. Now he tastes the money and power, so he thinks that we shoukd watch international movies too. The film industry will thrive if they produce good films , last year many reasonably good films were produced. In the past except for few good Directors, the rest of the film makers were focusing on very low quality movies. But do not flood the audiences with international movies because doing so would be a big mistake. Just bring in good quality international movies because we pay those in Dollars. Also try to woo Netflix to get our film makers produce good local series snd movies too. Ranil once said this too.

Dear Sir, in most of our TV stations 24 -7 what we can see is advertisements some crap movies. We for the last several years did not get the opportunity to watch a good English movie.

There were so many movies running in newly built cinemas in major cities. You did not notice these because your focus was about taking revenge from Rajapakshas or doing other anti government activities. Also, there are so many DVDs available , please note that you have to pay if you want to watch movies, we cannot use tax money to make English movies available to you. May be your Pachanayake is thinking about it.

Concentrate on what really matters to the people - the economy, debt repayment, comfortable and affordable public transport, shortage free supply chain of essentials for food and medicine. Leave the secondary matters like movies and entertainment to the audience!
