Sri Lanka reaffirms commitment to Human Rights, economic recovery at UNHRC



Colombo, Feb 25 (Daily Mirror) - Foreign Minister, Vijitha Herath, addressed the 58th Regular Session of the UN Human Rights Council outlining the government’s commitment to human rights, economic stability, and national reconciliation under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s leadership.

He highlighted the significance of Sri Lanka’s recent elections, which resulted in the country’s most inclusive Parliament, reflecting the government’s focus on equality and representation. Acknowledging the economic crisis of 2022, he emphasized the administration’s success in stabilizing the economy and its commitment to social welfare, with the 2025 budget prioritizing healthcare, education, and vulnerable communities. Special attention has been given to the Northern and Eastern Provinces through infrastructure development, livelihood support, and reconciliation initiatives.

Minister Herath introduced the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative to promote ethical governance and combat corruption, stressing the government’s focus on transparency and digital transformation. He reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s dedication to national unity, proposing a “Sri Lanka Day” to strengthen reconciliation efforts. Institutions such as the Office on Missing Persons and the Office for Reparations will be strengthened, while discussions on a Truth and Reconciliation Commission continue.

He reiterated Sri Lanka’s active role in international human rights frameworks and pledged cooperation with the UN while advocating for impartial global human rights practices. Concluding his address, he called for international support as Sri Lanka moves forward with economic recovery, reconciliation, and sustainable development.
