Sri Lanka launches EU-backed green reporting guidelines

Colombo, June 5 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today launched revised green reporting guidelines to align local public and private sectors with international sustainability standards.

The updated National Green Reporting System (NGRS) modernizes a framework originally introduced in 2011.

The changes help Sri Lankan organizations report environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance using Global Reporting Initiative standards.

The European Union (EU) funded the revision through a project implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.

Officials said the voluntary platform helps businesses measure sustainability and improve operational efficiency.

The guidelines also help local companies demonstrate compliance with evolving international regulatory requirements.

"We are supporting Sri Lankan companies to generate robust, comparable data," said Dr. Johann Hesse of the European Union Delegation.

He said the framework will help local businesses preserve and expand access to high-value international markets.

Project official Dr. Jagathdeva Vidanagama said the system provides a practical pathway to strengthen economic competitiveness.

The initiative fits into broader EU strategies to support green economic recovery and inclusive growth in Sri Lanka.
