Sri Lanka exceeds renewable energy targets: Minister

Colombo, Jan. 15 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka has made significant progress in expanding its renewable energy capacity and has already surpassed several national targets, Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody revealed yesterday.

Speaking at the launch of the Mannar wind power project, the Minister said the country had exceeded its 2025 renewable energy capacity addition target. While the original target for 2025 was 1,848 megawatts, Sri Lanka successfully added 2,695 megawatts to the national grid.

“For 2026, the target has been set at 2,078 megawatts, but agreements have already been signed for 3,089.5 megawatts,” he said.

He further noted that for the years 2027, 2028 and 2029, agreements have already been secured for capacities far exceeding the planned targets.

“From 2025 to 2029, instead of the originally planned total capacity addition of 9,759 megawatts, we have now secured agreements for 12,789.5 megawatts. This clearly shows that Sri Lanka is moving ahead successfully toward achieving its renewable energy goals,” the Minister stated.

Describing the Mannar region as one of the areas with the highest wind power potential in the country, he said the new project marked an important milestone in Sri Lanka’s energy sector.

“This is the first time in our history that electricity from wind power will be purchased at such a low tariff. It reflects the government’s strong commitment to clean and affordable energy,” he added.
