Whilst stating that Sri Lanka is among the 10 countries with highest climate risk, Presidential Advisor on Climate Change Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday said the country will come up with long-term plans to minimise risks of climate change, President’s media unit said.
Mr. Wijewardene who made this remark at an international forum on Climate Finance in Bangkok said Sri Lanka is focusing on formulating a national climate change policy.
“Sri Lanka is also focusing on filling 70 per cent of its energy needs through renewable energy and to see that the nation will not have a single coal power plant by 2050. Our plans will be in line with UNDP development goals,” he said.
“Climate finance is important as there is a correlation between climate changes and the economy.sri Lanka is facing a task of minimising climate change with its present economic crisis.we will seek support from BIOFIN programme of the UN,” he added.
Mr. Wijewardene stressed the need for collective effort to minimise effects of climate change.
