Colombo, March 22 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka is among the ten countries which are mostly affected by climate change, the first session of the Sri Lanka Climate Parliament revealed today.
The disclosure was made by Climate Parliament Chairman Eran Wickramaratne and Senior Presidential advisor Ruwan Wijewardene.
MP Wickremesratne stressed that the Sri Lanka Climate Parliament will work with internal bodies and other nations to minimize the effect of climate change.
“We intend to work with UNDP, UNDIO and will also work in line with the government’s road map for hydrogen,” he said.
Rwan Wijewardene also said that climate change will account for one percent loss of Sri Lanka’s GDP by 2050.
“Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector is slated to lose billions of dollars due to climate change,” he added.
“The government has adopted three strategies to face the situation. One is the tropical belt initiative which is a body made of nations located near the equator. The second is the climate justice initiative where focus is made on environment friendly development projects such as renewable energy initiative. The third is the international climate university,” he said.

I think Sri Lanka is dancing to a familiar international tune . It is a biodiversity hotspot, so many plants insects reptiles animals.The surrounding ocean and its assets adds to it's allure all 20 km of it.Very soon we will have foreigners telling us what to do with our assets all in the name of climate change.Have that election soon

Sri Lanka has to accept responsibility for clearing dense vegetation in own lands, which then leads to climate change. Government quick to point the finger to overseas, all while ignoring the wild animals here starving because government lets farmers destroy forests and clear other vegetation for unsustainable farming practices. Farming happening overseas in lands which were already plains, not jungle like here.

The agriculture sector is already reeling. You don't have to wait till 2050. As if that is not enough we have a wildlife problem. No solutions to any of these particularly from the politicians. Most don't comprehend any of this or the ramifications.

Cut down on the high salaries and perks of politicians and all other government officials including senior Tri Forces officers. Use the savings to invest on small Green projects for a more sustainable environment.

Sri lanka need to stop logging stop burning polytine plastics and other substances improve on diesel quality if we take care of our country first in basics to reduce toxic other things gradually can be improved like energy etc...

All I can say is, no matter how harsh the weather is, thanks to tax payers money, all politicians enjoy luxury lifestyle living in central A/C houses and apartments while ordinary citizens are burning in hell.

From where or how have they reached these conclusion? We are in the top 20 but down the list. Still it is a cause for concern but if anyone thinks that the 225 dumbbells in parliament is gonna do anything about it, they are dumbbells too.

We cannot do anything about the actions developed nations except demand help and assistance. The high priced property owners along Marine Drive Colombo need to plan ahead. The coastal railway in the same stretch is at risk

The overestimation and misdirection of our renewable energy potential are evident. There appears to be a lack of sensitivity to climate change and biodiversity, particularly in considering wind power generation projects on pristine islands and creating solar farms. Given Sri Lanka's ranking among the top 10 most climate change-affected countries globally, it's imperative to halt deforestation, adopt efficient waste management practices, and minimize excessive paving in urban areas. These measures are essential regardless of whether they relate to renewable energy generation or not.
