Sri Lanka among countries with lowest terror threats in the world

Colombo , March 11 (Daily Mirror)- The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has published the annual Global Terrorism Index 2025, in which Sri Lanka ranked 100th with a score of zero and was classified as a country with «no impact» of terrorism.

The Global Terrorism Index is a comprehensive study that analyzes the impact of terrorism on 163 countries, covering 99.7 percent of the world’s population.

The report indicates that Sri Lanka has significantly improved, dropping 64 spots in the index within a year, thereby lowering the risk of terror threats within the island nation.

The index measures the level of terrorist activity within a country by the number of terrorist attacks that have occurred, the number of deaths and injuries, and the level of material damage. The higher the ranking, the higher the risk of terrorist attacks in a given country.

In 2024, South Asia was the region with the highest average GTI score, a position it has held throughout the last decade," states the 2025 report.

"Despite the deterioration this year, which was driven primarily by Pakistan, terrorism has significantly declined compared to a decade ago, with all South Asian countries recording an improvement. This improvement is largely attributed to a decline in terrorist activity in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka."

The report also highlighted that the region is home to two of the 10 countries with the worst GTI scores, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Pakistan, the most impacted country in the region, scored 8.374 and held the second position globally on the 2025 index.

Following closely, Afghanistan scored 7.262, ranking ninth globally, while India scored 6.411, placing 14th globally.

Of the seven countries assessed in the region, only Bhutan and Sri Lanka have a GTI score of zero, meaning that it has not recorded a terrorist attack in the past five years.

Nepal is the third least impacted country by terrorism in the region, scoring 1.113 and ranking 68th globally, followed by Bangladesh.
