A T20 World Cup campaign which began with much promise for the Sri Lanka Women's team ended with a chastening defeat at the hands of New Zealand Women in their final Group Stage match in Paarl on Sunday.
The 102-run defeat eliminated Sri Lanka from the tournament, with New Zealand's progress now hinging on the result of hosts South Africa's final first round match against Bangladesh.
Dropped catches, missed run-outs and poor ground fielding cost Sri Lanka, after New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and elected to bat first.
An 46-run opening wicket partnership between Bernadine Bezuidenhout and Suzie Bates inside the Powerplay gave New Zealand a strong start, before Bates and Amelia Kerr put on a 110-run partnership for the second wicket.
Kerr scored her maiden T20I half-century, with 66 off 48 balls, while Bates also notched a fifty, as Sri Lanka were left frustrated -- a frustration exacerbated by their own missteps in the field.
New Zealand Women ended on 162 for 3 in their 20 overs, with Achini Kulasuriya and Inoka Ranaweera the only Sri Lanka bowlers to get a wicket.
In reply, Sri Lanka found runs hard to come by, losing all nine of their wickets for just 38 runs, after Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama put on a 22-run partnership at the top of the innings.
Fast bowler Kulasuriya, who hurt her shoulder while bowling, did not come out to bat.
Only Athapaththu and Malsha Shehani scored in double digits, as Amelia Kerr and Lea Tahunu took a brace of wickets each, reaping the benefits of a disciplined bowling performance where all bowlers had a dismissal to their name and only one conceded over four runs an over.

After being thumped by 10 wickets by the Aussies the Sri Lanka Womens Cricket Team still have a long way to go losing to the NZ Womens Cricket team by 102 runs. No wonder none of the women cricketers failed to secure a contract in the IPL which goes to prove they are not good enough. Like their counterparts the Sri Lanka Mens Cricket Team is also creating lots of problems to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board at international competitions overseas.

It's always the case with Sri Lankan cricket... And expecting IPL call ups too ... Winning one or two matches is not important... Consistency is ZERO.... Why not increase the match fee again now.. silly as ever

On a different note, T20 cricket has ruined TEST cricket!! That was on display at Delhi test, 3rd day morning, out of 9 wickets fell in the morning session 6 were out for playing the T20 mentality shot, yes the sweep shot, pathetic to watch!! Then England scored 325 runs at 5.6 runs per over in the first innings and in the second innings too scored 374 runs at over 5 runs per over in the game against kiwis just finished!! Huh!!

Sri Lankan Men failed to reach the semi-finals in the 2022 20T world cup and lost 5 out of six white-ball matches in India and the last one with the worst defeat establishing a World Record. SL Women lost by 102 runs, the worst defeat so far in this World Cup. SL won ODI World Cup in 1996 and T20 World Cup in 2014 and in between reached the finals 5 times. That was before this corrupt and clueless SLC came to power. 'Well done' SLC and its 185 staff with a monthly salary of Rs 57 million.

Long way to go...Learn from others.. Not capable of competing or challenging with opposition. Most of the team members are unfit and unworthy to be in the team.

I agree with Pushpalatha. Our Cricketers were so unfit that they could not bend to stop the ball when it came to fours, also the dropped catches and they are unable to play cover drive shots.

Aussie and Kiwi women exposed the SL women cricketers to show the world what the latter really are! The win against SA was an aberration, and they thought they won the world cup. That is why some of them chose to display their disgusting behaviour against BD women. Only one (the wicket keeper) got penalized. In my opinion Chamari should have been penalized too. The sinhala saying "Miti then deka puppanne, Us then deka hekilenne" comes to mind. I wonder whether they will show similar behaviour against English, Aussie or even Indian players? I bet they will not. Well, they are out now, having to savour only their ARROGANCE!

Did the coach make a mistake by not just going for 124 to keep our RR above NZ? Because there is always a small possibility BD may beat nervous SA.
