Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga climbs to World No. 3 in Javelin Rankings

Colombo, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka’s javelin sensation Rumesh Tharanga has achieved a historic milestone by surging to the third position in the latest Men's Javelin Throw World Rankings, published by World Athletics.

According to the newly updated standings, Tharanga has secured an impressive total of 1,324 ranking points. He sits just two points behind the world number two, Anderson Peters of Grenada, who holds 1,326 points. The top spot on the leaderboard is currently held by Germany's Julian Weber, who leads the world rankings with 1,360 points.

With this monumental update, the young Sri Lankan athlete has successfully bypassed some of the biggest icons in global track and field, including two prominent Olympic gold medalists. Notably, India's world-renowned champion Neeraj Chopra now holds the 5th position, while Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem is positioned at 10th place in the latest rankings.

Tharanga’s dramatic rise to the world top three follows his extraordinary performance at the recently concluded Diamond League Athletics meet held in Rome, Italy. During the prestigious event, he stunned the international field by throwing a phenomenal distance of 92.62 meters, shattering the existing Sri Lankan national record and setting a brand-new Diamond League meet record.
