Special state pardon for 285 prisoners

Colombo, Feb 04 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 285 prisoners have been granted special state pardons on the occasion of the 77th National Independence Day.

The Prisons Department stated that there are six female prisoners among them.

The largest number of inmates will be released from the Wariyapola Prison, a total of 33 prisoners, under the special state pardon granted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Meanwile, 31 prisoners from the Mahara Prison, 22 from the Anuradhapura and 15 prisoners from Welikada Prison will be released today.

The Prisons Department said a group of prisoners who were imprisoned for minor offenses and unable to pay fines have been granted freedom in this way.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Independence Day today, prison inmates will have a special opportunity to enjoy open houses.

Accordingly, the Prisons Department further stated that relatives of inmates can provide food and hygiene items sufficient for each inmate.

Change the law in this issue : if people can’t pay the fines let them do some social work instead of fine : jails are not money making machines for the government: it is all done with outdated piece of law : who said if you they can’t pay they must be detained: is it done to make the government to pay for them for their three meals or it is done to by some government offices to make money out of them : I don’t think this is a right way to keep them : what legal reasoning do they have for this detention? I can’t believe this take place in the age of modern world :

There you go. They will never release the Tamil political prisoners,even after 30 years in prison without producing them to a court of law.If they release, they are aware that they won’t be able to show their power over the minority. A disgrace
