Special security for Dileepa Peeris after threat

Colombo, August 26 (Daily Mirror) - A special police protection has been provided to Additional Solicitor General and President’s Counsel Dileepa Peeris, following credible intelligence of a threat to his life by organised criminals based in Dubai.

According to police, the move was ordered by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya after receiving the intelligence alert on Saturday night (August 23).

The warning indicated a potential plot to harm Peeris, a senior officer of the Attorney General’s Department who has represented the state in several high-profile and controversial legal cases.

Peeris also appeared on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department in the case against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Peiris is a hard working honest prosecuting lawyer. Persons of his calibre are required in SL which is transforming its corrupt criminal culture to a just society where everyone is equal before the law. He must be given maximum protection.
