Colombo, June 5 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministry of Health has announced the implementation of a special dengue mosquito control programme on June 8, 9, and 10, in light of the rising spread of the disease in Sri Lanka.
According to the plan, the programme will be carried out across 74 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions in 14 districts, focusing particularly on areas identified as high-risk zones for dengue transmission.
The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) stated that assistance from the Police and the Tri-Forces will be deployed to support field operations during the campaign. Authorities will also give special attention to locations considered highly vulnerable to mosquito breeding.
The NDCU further noted that red notices will be issued against properties found to be maintaining conditions conducive to mosquito breeding, with legal action to follow where necessary.
Meanwhile, the number of confirmed dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka so far this year has risen to 35,228, the NDCU said. This represents an increase of approximately 30% to 40% compared to the same period last year.
The highest number of infections has been recorded in the Western Province, with the majority of cases reported from the Colombo District, health authorities added.
