Special committee to assess implications of UK sanctions

The government has appointed a special committee to assess the implications of the United Kingdom’s recent sanctions on four Sri Lankan individuals and recommend further action.

The committee comprises Vijitha Herath – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara – Minister of Justice and National Integrity and Aruna Jayasekara – Deputy Minister of Defence.

The Cabinet of Ministers has empowered the committee to conduct a thorough study of the matter and consult experts in relevant fields.

The committee is all politicians, who have no experience id dealing international and foreign affairs of significant importance. It would have been very useful if they included senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well, experienced career diplomats.

When a Sri Lankan government is in a dilemma, it goes on to establish a committee to hoodwink the public. eg: So many committees were established to investigate Tamil massacres and they are all on the back burner, not a single one was implemented to the public's satisfaction. The other was Batalanda Report ordered by President CBK. Will this bring satisfaction to the victims' next of kins.

Why? It won't impact these four individuals unless they choose to travel overseas. Who cares about these four especially given that they/the Govt is not asked to pay compensation to all the victims of these cruel characters?
