Speaker’s official residence to be transformed into knowledge centre

Colombo, July 9 (Daily Mirror) - The official residence of the Speaker will be transformed into a knowledge centre providing information to all members representing all layers of governance in the country, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramanayake said.

The Speaker made these remarks during a recent meeting held at Parliament with a delegation from the European Union, including Dr. Jonathan Murphy, Head of the Inter Pares global project implemented by the European Union, and Ms. Ingrid Walker, Programme Manager of Inter Pares.

He said that this centre is planned to impart essential knowledge to members of local authorities, Provincial Councils and Parliament on subjects such as international relations, fiscal policy and governance.

The Speaker also revealed that it is proposed to develop this centre into a national and international-level research institution that supports both qualitative and quantitative research.

The transformation of the speakers official residence in to a knowledge centre is commendable. But we are in dilemma whether there is an ability to make the government officers aware of the good governance and the fiscal policies. Most of the government officers have been accustomed to a system being introduced by the previous political leadership. This was why number of high ranking officers were caught in the bribery racket and some sort of corruptions. As we believe it will not be easy to make government officers inculcated to adhere to the best practices of the government mechanism

This is a super decision if the centre can be managed with qualified staff who can handle the subjects that will be taught at the centre. They can have short courses covering the area necessary for different categories of public servants and politicians

Speaker is just a lodger there. He has no right to convert a government property to any other thing without the approval from the authorities.

Don’t aim too high. First bring in racial equality, get rid of discrimination, the best students for higher academic studies, introduce non academic job training, more builders, electricians, carpenters, vehicle maintenance mechanics, skilled labourers, good post graduate teachers, compulsory English language education in schools from primary schools, English a compulsory subject for university education.

I am abroad. Sometime ago I read that the speaker of the parliament had a false PhD and called himself a doctor. What happened to that matter. It’s hilarious in Sri Lanka to possess false PhDs!!
