Speaker announces name of members appointed to National Council



Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana today announced the appointment of members to the proposed National Council.

The Council is headed by Speaker himself, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene, Leader of the House Susil Premajayantha, Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella.

The members nominated from parties include Douglas Devananda, Nazeer Ahmed, Tiran Alles, Sisira Jayakody, Sivanseathurei Chandrakanthan, Johnston Fernando, Rauff Hakeem, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Vajira Abeywardana, L. Digambaram, Mano Ganesan, Udaya Gammanpila, Rohitha Abeygunawardene, Jeevan Thondaman, G. G. Ponnambalam, Ven. Attureliye Ratana, Asanka Nawaratne, Ali Zabry Raheem, C. V. Vigneswaran, Weerasumana Weerasinghe, Sagala Kariyawasam, Namal Rajapaksa and Rishad Bathidudeen.

The Speaker said these members have been named by their respective political parties.

Accordingly the Jathika Jana Balawegaya, TNA and the independent group led by MP Anura Yapa have not named members to the council.

The Executive Committee has the power to call up reports from cabinet Ministers, Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE), Committee on Public Accounts (COPA), Public Finance Committee and new committee which are to be appointed including ways and means committee, Committee on economic stabilization.

The committee has jurisdiction to determine the general priorities of Parliament, to guide the formation of short, medium and long term national policies and to agree on a short, medium and programs to stabilize the economy. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
